The SAT is the most widely used admission exam for universities in the United States — and one of the most concrete paths for international students to earn places and scholarships abroad. Since 2023 the test has been fully digital, shorter, and adaptive. This guide covers the essentials for anyone starting from zero.
The test measures two areas: Reading & Writing and Math. Each is scored from 200 to 800, for a composite between 400 and 1600. The whole test takes about 2 hours and 14 minutes, delivered through an official app called Bluebook, on your own laptop or on a computer at the test center.
The format is stage-adaptive: each section has two modules, and your performance on the first determines the difficulty of the second. Doing well on module 1 unlocks the harder module 2 — the route to the top of the score scale.
The SAT is administered at authorized centers in most countries — usually international schools — on international test dates spread across the year. Registration happens directly on the College Board's website, the organization that runs the exam. Create your account early: seats at international centers are limited, and the best dates fill up.
There is no universal cutoff score. Highly selective universities tend to have averages above 1500; many excellent universities accept far wider ranges — and a strong score also opens doors to merit scholarships.
