The Digital SAT, explained: sections, timing, and adaptive modules

The SAT has been fully digital since 2023 — shorter, faster-paced, and adaptive. If your mental model of the test comes from paper-era advice, this is what actually awaits you on test day.

The structure at a glance

The test has two sections, always in this order, separated by a 10-minute break:

Reading & Writing: two modules of 27 questions, 32 minutes each — 54 questions, 64 minutes total.
Math: two modules of 22 questions, 35 minutes each — 44 questions, 70 minutes total.

Total testing time is about 2 hours and 14 minutes. Each section is scored from 200 to 800, for a composite of 400 to 1600.

What "adaptive" really means

The Digital SAT is stage-adaptive, not question-adaptive. Everyone gets a first module of mixed difficulty. Your performance on it decides which second module you receive: a harder one or an easier one. Two consequences matter:

The two possible second modules cover different score ranges, and the top of the 400–1600 scale runs through the harder one — which makes module 1 accuracy the gatekeeper for high scores.
Scoring is not a simple count of correct answers. The College Board uses Item Response Theory, so question characteristics such as difficulty factor into your score, and each module also contains two unscored pretest questions. The practical pacing takeaway survives anyway: secure the questions you can solve, flag the rest, and come back.

Reading & Writing: short passages, one question each

Gone are the long passages with question sets. Every question has its own passage of roughly 25 to 150 words, drawn from literature, science, social science, and the humanities. Skills tested fall into four domains: Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions. The pace is brisk — about 71 seconds per question — which rewards a trained reading routine over raw speed.

Math: calculator always allowed

There is no no-calculator section anymore. The Bluebook app embeds the Desmos graphing calculator, available on every question — and learning to use it well is one of the highest-leverage skills on the test. About 75% of questions are multiple choice; the rest are student-produced responses (grid-ins). Content spans Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry.

How to prepare for this format

Because routing depends on module 1, practice under realistic adaptive conditions — not just question drills.
